ECE Activity: LAP Cube

Date: March 2014
Location: Ryerson Early Learning Centre
Age of the Children: 2 to 3.5 years old

Description:

I created a large cube with printed pictures of meals that the children would be familiar with. The activity encouraged the children to describe each meal in their home language and/or expand their vocabulary. During circle time each child would have a turn rolling the cube and then he/she would say the meal in their home language. If the child didn’t know how to say it in their home language or didn’t have one, then I would ask questions regarding the picture, for example, would you eat this meal at breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snack time?

Significance:

At first I was reluctant in creating a LAP activity. When I finally thought of the activity based on the children’s interest of food and the grocery store, I was excited to share this activity to the class. It was particularly special because a child’s mother was in the classroom, so she was able to share their family’s language to the class. The children were able to learn more about their classmate, and a different language.
