ECE Activity: Patterning

Date: March 2016
Location: Centennial Infant and Child Centre
Age of Child: 4 years old

Description:

I created six pattern boards with varying colours and shapes. I presented the activity to the child and demonstrated how to do the first pattern. After the child copied what I demonstrated. As the child completed each task I presented a new pattern for the child to do. The activity required the child to know the difference between stars and hearts, and colours.

Significance:

I have observed the child create patterns with Lego blocks during free play time. The child has mastered ABAB patterns and I wanted to know at what skill level the child was at. As the activity continued I used various techniques to help the child complete the pattern. This included starting at the beginning of the pattern and using verbal and visual cues to determine what is the next item.
