ECE Activity: Spelling

Date: May 2016
Location: Every Child Counts, Marsh Harbour, Abaco, Bahamas
Age of Children: 10-13 years old

Description:

Each week the students had a spelling list to learn. As a way to practice, students would write the words on slips of paper, creating flash cards. With the flash cards I implemented activities that encouraged partner work, and self-correcting activities. I took the activities further by deconstructing the word into each letter. This allowed for more challenging activities, like, unscrambling.

Significance:

The students were able to review their spelling words in a novel way. In additions to language development, the activities supported the students social development. For example, a student who was reserved and usually kept to himself during break and lunch time interacted with a peer while testing each other. The student showed excitement when he or his partner spelled the word correctly, and showed support and determination when incorrect.
