Every Child Counts

Marsh Harbour, Abaco, Bahamas

My international internship was at Marsh Harbour, Abaco, Bahamas in the Every Child Counts School (ECC) for Children with Special Needs. This is a primary and secondary school for children with special needs. ECC helps children develop lifelong skills to be full members in their community. The school welcomes all students regardless of financial, family, or social challenges. In addition the school works to break the stigmatization of people who have special needs within the community and Bahamas. It is the only special needs school on the island of Abaco.

I was placed in a classroom with the upper primary students aged 10-13, with an academic grade level of 1-3. My Field Educator was Ms. Vernelle Carrey, who has been working at ECC for almost a decade. I was in the classroom from Monday May 2nd to Friday May 27th, 2016. Over the course of four weeks I was had the opportunity to facilitate individual small group, and large group activities covering mathematics, language, vocals, physical education, and creative arts. My placement at ECC consisted of working with older children in a formal educational setting.
