For seventy years the Canadian Rangers have been protecting the sovereignty of Northern Canada; however, very few Canadians are aware of their role and responsibilities. The Canadian Rangers conduct and support sovereignty operations; conduct and assist with domestic military operations; and maintains a Canadian Forces presence in local communities. Given the vast and isolated area that the Rangers are responsible for, they are an integral part of our national security and community-based outreach. The following project will demonstrate that the Canadian Rangers are part of a sustainable North, in particular, the 2nd Canadian Rangers Patrol Group stationed throughout Northern Quebec. As part of the Canadian Armed Forces, the Canadian Rangers are in a position to be leaders in their community. Specifically, with the Junior Canadian Rangers program, teaching traditional, life, and Ranger skills. Their efforts can expand, if the federal government increases their $29 million budget, and employ more full-time Rangers. Most importantly, the Canadian Rangers are considered the eyes and ears of the North, and so they are involved in monitoring the changes in the environment. This includes monitoring the caribou populations, and search and rescue missions during extreme weather. I conclude that with greater government investment, the Canadian Rangers can be part of a respectable model of Northern sustainability. Based on these reasons, I disagree with Simpson, because the Canadian Rangers  act on traditional skills and knowledge, and represents Northern Canada’s potential.
