From the research, I recognize the difficult work the Canadian Rangers do with limited recognition and support. I believe that the Rangers have structure and influence to be part of a sustainable North. Ultimately, it is the knowledge, work, and dedication of the Rangers themselves that support the North. With a younger population, the Canadian Rangers have an opportunity to grow and be a greater contributor.
To reach this potential I recommend the federal government to be committed to the Canadian Rangers in funding for more services, and resources. It is unacceptable that as part of the Armed Forces, they do not have the required equipment to serve and protect the country. As a priority by the Building a Resilient and Prosperous North, the Aboriginal youth can gain valuable skills from the Junior Canadian Rangers program and in turn assist in meeting their communities basic needs and coping with daily challenges (Conference Board of Canada, 2015). Most importantly, it is having a system that acknowledges the different challenges facing the 5 patrol groups. This means the community members who live in the area should be respected and viewed as experts for what is needed. In the long run, it is giving the Canadian Rangers the resources to achieve their mission statement of providing "a military presence in sparsely settled northern, coastal and isolated areas of Canada that cannot conveniently or economically be provided for by other components of the Canadian Forces” (Lackenbauer et al., 2013, p.2).
